Research
Before I started on the production of my newspaper I carried out a sufficient amount of research.
The first newspaper I looked out was The North Somerset Times. As you can see the Portishead Post uses the colour scheme as the Times with the blue for the title and main cover line. For my project I chose blue as Portishead is situated on the coast and blue is usually shown to represent the coast. One thing I done differently from the times is that I covered more stories on the front page such as sport, competitions and house for sale. But the Times only cover two stories. In my opinion this will help pull in more sales as it will more stories will appeal to a wider range of the local population, that is also the reason why there is no advertisement on my front page as I believe it takes up valuable story space.
The Second local paper I research was the Western Mercury. This is the leading local newspaper in the North Somerset area so it’s an ideal layout to follow but in my opinion there is slightly to much advertisement on the front page, even if this is the ideal area for advertisement and gains the most money through advertisement the Portishead Post will not have this much advertisement. I shall also try and recreate the border that has been used in the Mercury which separated the text and the images.
The third and final paper I researched was the Evening Post. The Post cover Bristol and North Somerset and must cover a large population with a circulation of 42,000, this leads to a large variation in the stories covered. Like the Evening Post I have used images in the top banner to relate to sections of the newspaper such as sport and housing. In terms of the logo I have once again used the sea and cost theme where I have used and Anchor and the evening Post have used a boat.
